BECKET – Michael F. “Mike” Sawyer, 54, passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Berkshire Medical Center. Mike was born in Westfield to Lucille Wirfel Sawyer and the late Robert Sawyer. He was a 1981 graduate of Westfield Vocational High School. He joined the US Navy in 1981. He switched to the US Air Force in 1984 serving until 1988 when he joined the Air National Guard at Barnes in Westfield, where he retired as a Master Sargent in 2007. During his long service career he was afforded the opportunity to visit many places both overseas and in the U.S., namely the Azores, Germany, Italy and Holland. Mike was also a member of the Becket Police Department since 1996 and was a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Debbie Lambach Sawyer; his two daughters: Heather (Jonathan) Baczek of Westfield and Stephanie Sawyer of Becket; his son, Nicholas Sawyer of Becket and the light of his life, his granddaughter, Eliza Baczek. He also leaves behind his mother, Lucille Sawyer; his sister, Eileen (Shawn) Scully of Westfield and his brother, Tom Sawyer (Michelle) and their children Brandon and Brittany of Feeding Hills. He was predeceased by his father, Robert, in 2016 and his sister, Maureen, in 1988. As per Mike’s wishes, there will be no calling.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 11AM at the First Congregational Church of Becket, 22 YMCA Rd., Becket, MA with the Rev. Kevin Smail presiding. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Sawyer Children Education Fund in care of Kelly Funeral Home, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238.
