Around Town

Tree removal project already underway

SOUTHWICK – Allied Tree Service out of Westfield will be taking down a lot more trees than just the two that will be cut on the intersection of S. Longyard and Granaudo Circle this Tuesday.

Department of Public Works Director Randy Brown has stated that he has a list of 16 different addresses in town that will have trees removed.

Brown said that the overall expenditure for the tree removal is $15,300.

Having Allied remove this long list of trees in town has been an important priority for the DPW to take care of.

“We’re constantly looking at trees,” said Brown. “We have a pretty extensive list of trees to cut down.”

The majority of the trees being cut down are either dead, decaying or are a safety concern which warrants their removal.

“That’s the reason why they’re on the list,” said Brown.

The trees being cut down on S. Longyard are healthy and are being removed for safety reasons. All of the trees will be marked with an “x” so people will be aware that they are getting cut down.

Brown also noted that the stump that will be taken out on Hastings Rd. is for a specific reason, other than for safety reasons or being deceased. The stump will be removed so the DPW can add drainage control to that location in effort to address future flooding or freezing issues.

As the DPW only has a certain amount of money in their budget that they can use with removing trees, the DPW has planned out a way to stay within the budget while removing as many as trees as possible that are on their list.

“We group a number of trees into one contract and that’s what we’ve done here,” said Brown.

The tree removal process with these trees already started last Tuesday, but Brown expects for the project to continue through next week.
