BOSTON (AP) — A line of violent thunderstorms accompanied by howling winds that moved across southern New England in the early morning hours has knocked out power to tens of thousands of customers.
More than 70,000 Connecticut homes and businesses remained without power at about 7 a.m. Thursday, according to the state’s two major utilities.
National Grid and Eversource reported a combined 17,000 outages in Massachusetts while Eversource reported almost 13,000 without electricity in Rhode Island.
With unseasonably high temperatures in the low 60s in some areas, the winds that gusted up to 75 miles per hour knocked down tree limbs, although there were no immediate reports of injuries.
The MBTA said a tree limb that fell on a track was delaying trains on the Worcester/Framingham commuter rail line.
A portion of Goss Hill Road was closed in Huntington Thursday morning.
Huntington Highway Superintendent Chip Dazelle said the area closed was from 154 to 181 Goss Hill Road.
Dazelle said the section of the road was washed out and that a car was stuck in a ditch.
