SOUTH DENNIS – It has been a victory-starved run through the 2016 tournaments for area high school winter sports teams. Until now.
No. 17 Longmeadow-Westfield traveled some 160 miles to get its first postseason victory – and the region’s first – in a Division 2 girls’ ice hockey tournament opener Wednesday night, a 2-0 win over 16th-seeded Dennis-Yarmouth at Tony Kent Arena.

Bailey Tymeson and Katie Joyal each scored a goal, and goalie Lexi Levere (15 saves) earned a shutout in net
Karalyn Jones and Kyra Ashe assisted on the team’s first goal of the game, a shot from Tymeson. Madison and Mackenzie Pelletier assisted on Joyal’s insurance effort.
Longmeadow (12-6-1) will move on to face the tournament’s overall No. 1 seed, Methuen/Tewksbury (16-1-3), Saturday at Methuen High School Rink at 5:50 p.m.
