SOUTHWICK – The 250th Anniversary Committee held their monthly meeting Monday night at the Southwick Town Hall.
According to 250th Chairman Jim Putnam, the first expenditures were approved due to a $25,000 grant that the town received from Sen. Don Humason and Rep. Nick Boldyga from the state. Some earmarks for that money will include sign brackets and banners to be placed near the center of town for a parade, along with money for fireworks.
Additional ideas for celebratory events include a 250th boat parade celebration on Congamond Lake, as well as a farm parade and a taste of Southwick. Putnam also said that the Communications work group is still working on incorporating a logo to be created for the 250th celebration.
A few new members also joined the committee and it’s something that Putnam says the town will need moving forward.
“It’s going to be all hands on deck,” said Putnam. “Everybody’s welcome.”
Putnam is pleased with what the committee has been able to accomplish in the few months they’ve worked together thus far.
“I think we’re making good progress, I think we’re right on the timeline,” said Putnam.
The next meeting is scheduled for November 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Southwick Town Hall.
In April, the Select Board announced that they were looking to form a committee to work on the 250th anniversary project. In 2020, the town of Southwick will be celebrating their 250th anniversary. The town was incorporated as a separate community on November 7, 1770.
The committee’s plan is to have an event each month and have the year-long celebration begin in December of 2019 and end in November of 2020.
