RUSSELL-More than 500 colorful plastic Easter eggs were stuffed Thursday night by members of the Town of Russell Recreation Committee in anticipation of Saturday morning’s annual Easter Egg Hunt.
“Last year we had about 25 children from town so we are hoping more town children and grandchildren of residents turn out,” said Illtyd Fernandez-Sierra, who has been involved with the committee for more than 10 years.
Starting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Town Hall, a handful of members and volunteers began the task of filling each egg with a variety of chocolate goodies including M&M’s, Snickers and Milky Way bars.
The egg hunt is for children age 10 and younger and begins at 10 a.m. at the Russell Elementary School. In addition to the hunt, all children will be given a raffle ticket to try and win one of three raffle baskets. Each basket will not only be filled with candy but also fun toys including stuffed animals and egg puzzles.
Nancy Mezger, who has been active on the recreation committee for many years, said she enjoys the event because she has lived in town most of her life.
“We do these events for the kids,” said Mezger, adding that more volunteers are needed for committee events throughout the year.
Paula Hepburn, a committee member for three years, echoed those sentiments.
“I have twin 8-year-olds so I know how important these events are,” said Hepburn.
In addition to the egg hunt and raffle prize giveaways, the Easter Bunny is expected to stop by and interact with children. Parents are encouraged to take photos of their children with the Easter Bunny.
Refreshments will also be provided during the rain or shine event.
“Don’t forget to bring your baskets,” said Hepburn.
Town residents are always needed to help out at recreation events and can inquire about volunteering opportunities by following the committee’s Facebook page – Town of Russell Recreation Committee. Members of the committee also include Debbie Hoppe and Richard Hansen.
