WESTFIELD: Margie was born, April 25,1934 in Durham, NC. Her mother passed away weeks after she was born, so she spent much of her childhood in boarding schools as an orphan, having to do chores in exchange for her room and board. In her teen years she moved around with her older sister, and that is how she came to Massachusetts. It was in Springfield that she met her ‘Prince Charming’, John Vershon Jr. They married in 1953, and had two children, Nancy Ann, and John III. Margie always strived to give her children a much better childhood than she had, and was a very big supporter for her husband who was a recovered alcoholic and AA member for more than 34 years. She worked at Ames Department Store in Westfield for 26 years as a stock clerk and enjoyed and loved her coworkers immensely. She kept in contact with several of the ladies for many years afterwards. She and her family owned and operated the Riverbend Mobile Home Park for more than 30 years, and she enjoyed close friendships with many of the residents. On May 13, 2015 Margie passed away. Margie leaves a son, John Vershon III, and was predeceased by her daughter Nancy Ann in 1971 and John Jr., her husband of 55 years. She also leaves an ‘adopted’ daughters, Ellen McCauley and Karen Carmel, and her three ‘adopted’ grandchildren, Theresa, David, and Johnny Carmel, many nieces and nephews and friends too numerous to count. Margie loved people, and loved having company. Her heartfelt greeting was always “I’m so happy to see you!” She will finally be able to share that greeting with her Prince Charming, her husband John, and her daughter Nancy. Mother enjoyed helping children go to camp and sponsored several children over the years. I am sure she would appreciate knowing that more kids can go to camp so in lieu of flowers please send a memorial gift to Hume Lake Christian Camp (formerly New England Keswick) in Monterey, MA (mailing address: 73 Chestnut Hill Road, Monterey, MA 01245)A memorial service for Margie will be held on May 30th, at 10:00 am at the Westfield Evangelical Free Church, 568 Southwick Road, Westfield, MA.
