John F. Streit, Jr.

FAYETTEVILLE, NC: flagJohn Frederick Streit Jr. went home to be with Jesus on December 22, 2015. He was born on February 2nd, 1932 on Long Island, New York to Carolina (Maurer) and John F. Streit. He graduated from Pennsylvania Military Prep School in 1950, attended Springfield College in MA, and received his Masters of Science in Human Resource Management.
John was a proud veteran and pilot, flying B47 bombers with the 2nd Bomb Wing and air refueling KC97 tankers with the 384th Air Refueling Squadron of the Strategic Air Command , followed by 3 tours in Vietnam as C130 pilot of the Tactical Air Command. He received the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement While Participating in Aerial Flight, the First & Second Oakleaf Clusters for Meritorious Service, National Defense Service Medal, Outstanding Unit Award, United Nations Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Readiness Medal, Korean Service Medal, AF Longevity Service Award, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross, AF Commendation Medal, and the Airman’s Medal. John retired honorably at Pope Air Force Base in 1975 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
John then taught Real Estate at Fayetteville Technical Community College, retiring in 1990.
He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis (Paulin), and 5 daughters, Deborah Samwell, of Westfield, MA; Cynthia, Susan, Joni, and Janet; and a step-son Lawrence Glindeman of Fayetteville, NC; and 10 grandchildren including Lindsay Cushing of Springfield, VA.
John was a past member of the Masons, the Shriners, and the Lions Club. He loved his 4-legged pets and always had 2 or 3 rescue dogs.
John was an avid golfer and member of the Cape Fear Seniors Golf league. He was a Master’s-level bridge player and member of the Southern Pines and the Blue Street Bridge Clubs. He was a talented painter and enjoyed attending art classes.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, Dec. 27 at 4:00 at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Parlor, Ramsey Drive, Fayetteville. Burial with full military honors will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
