Michael W. Smith

WESTFIELD: flagMichael W. Smith, 60, of Westfield, passed away at home in his sleep on Friday, May 13 after a battle with long-term illness.  Mike is survived by his son and daughter, Ryan Smith and Deidre Smith; his former spouse, Cynthia (Swords) Smith; Brother-in-laws, Chris and Keith Swords; his father, William Smith, of Merced, California; his brothers, Steve, Richard, and Don Smith; and many extended family members and friends.  He is pre-deceased by his mother and stepfather, Norma and Robert Hull of Santa Maria, California, and his former in-laws, Richard and Barbara Swords; Pamela Gay; and Kevin and Patrick Swords.  Mike was born in Culver City, California, on January 12, 1956.  He attended Agoura High School, where he excelled and was named MVP in football and baseball.  In 1973 he enlisted in the Navy as an aviation electrician, stationed in Moffett Field, California.  After being discharged, he got married and moved to Massachusetts to start a family.  Throughout his career he worked as a machinist at Hamilton Standard and Olympic Manufacturing Group.  Mike was an avid golfer, fisherman, and hunter.  He enjoyed spelunking, riding his Harley, and watching sports and old Westerns. His charm, wry sense of humor, and presence will be deeply missed. Services for immediate friends and family will be held on Wednesday, May 18 at 3:00 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, with a celebration of life to follow at the Moose Lodge in Westfield at 5:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your charity of choice.
