Epic battle: Parts I, II

WESTFIELD – Some of the best high school tennis was played in the past few days across Western Massachusetts.
On Saturday, Westfield’s top boys’ tennis singles player, junior Tristin Viale, made a solid run through a talented field before running into the tournament’s top seed.
Viale defeated Ibz Zia (Lee High) in his first postseason match of 2016, by the count of 6-1, 6-1.

In the next round, Viale avenged a narrow early season loss to Central’s No. 1 player Hussein Abdi, beating Abdi handily, 7-1, 6-0.
Abdi returned the favor Monday, overcoming Viale’s strong effort to win 0-6, 6-4, (11-9).
Viale’s postseason was cut short by Longmeadow’s Will Chen – the tourney favorite – in the quarterfinals, 0-6, 0-6. Chen brought a solid resume to the tournament, having upended the defending state champion from St. John’s in a match early this year.
TOURNEY NOTES: Westfield’s No. 3 individual player, Lyle Libanan defeated Ludlow’s No. 1 player, Sean Nugent, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round. His run ended in the next round though with a valiant effort, losing to East Longmeadow’s top player, Kabir Khurana, 2-6, 4-6.
Westfield’s No. 2 player, Shayne Holloway lost in his opening round, 2-6, 1-6.
In doubles action, Westfield’s James Knapik and Matt Roberts fell to a very tough Northampton duo, 5-7, 4-6. Bombers’ Colin Gilbert and Jaylen Bodendorg lost to Minnechaug’s top team, 0-6, 2-6.
REGULAR SEASON UPDATE: On Monday, each of Westfield’s players returned to action, and won, with only Viale losing by the slimmest of margins. The Bombers trumped the visiting Central Golden Eagles, 4-1.

BASEBALL
Bombers zip by Falcons in extra
Westfield 5, Minnechaug 4 (8 inn.)

Westfield scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to clip the Minnechaug Falcons.
Westfield’s lead-off batter, Austin St. Pierre went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored; J.D. Huntley collected two hits and drove in one run; Sean Murphy scored one run and knocked in another; Mason St. Pierre and Sean Moorhouse had one RBI apiece, and Aidan Dunn scored a run.
Ari Schwartz pitched all eight innings for Westfield. Schwartz allowed four runs (two earned), struck out four batters and walked three.

Mitchell extends streak in Rams’ thriller
Southwick 8, Putnam 7

Southwick’s Andrew Mitchell continued his 16-game hitting streak with a hit, RBI and two runs scored.
Dan McCllelan (2-for-4, 2 runs scored) and Bart Shea (3-for-4, two doubles, 3 RBIs, 2 runs scored) also contributed on offense for Southwick. Rams’ Travis Pirello recorded six strikeouts, and Sam Parker (3 Ks) picked up the win in relief.

Saints shut out Mustangs
St. Mary 12, Monson 0

Hunter Authier (2-for-5, two RBIs), Jake Butler (4-for-5, double, RBI), Shaun Gezotis (2-for-4, double, four runs, three RBIs), and Quinn Powers (2-for-2, run) led the St. Mary hit attack. Saints’ Drew Collins and Billy Lamirande scored two runs apiece. Matt Masciadrelli had two RBIs.
John Daley (4 inn., 0 hits, 5 Ks, 2 BBs), Nate Bonini (2 inn., 1 hit, 3 Ks), and Kyle Koloski (1 inn., 1 hit, 0 BBs) pitched a combined two-hitter for St. Mary.

Tom Ruffo went 2-for-3 to lead Gateway with a run scored.

Igor Belokopytvo (15 kills, 7 digs), Eddie Loboda (10 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks), Noah Kappel (6 kills, 3 blocks), Ryan Murray (6 kills, 3 blocks), Tyler Stanton (25 digs, 3 aces), Scott Walsh (38 assists, 2 aces, 7 digs), and Andrew Burrage (5 aces, 8 digs) fueled Westfield’s home sweep.

Rams sweep Indians
Southwick def. Ware, 25-9, 25-7, 25-17

Jack Lebo (7 kills, 5 digs), Ryan Todesco (6 kills, 5 digs), Tim Giancola (11 assists), and Declan O’Donnell (6 digs, 3 aces) were instrumental in helping Southwick sweep visiting Ware.

BOYS’ LACROSSE
Sullivan nets seven, boosts WHS
Westfield 18, South Hadley 10

Anthony Sullivan netted seven goals, Mason Balch recorded eight points (6 goals, 2 assists), Matt Chlastawa finished with three goals and two assists, and two others (Matt Bonsall, Chris Ward) tallied one goal apiece in Westfield’s victory.
Kohl Lunardini was exceptional on face-offs for Westfield. Bombers’ defensemen Mitch Weiss, Mario Metallo, and Zach Cree solidified the defensive front.
Westfield goalie Matt Reynolds made 13 saves.
Balch scored nine goals to lead the Bombers past the East Longmeadow Spartans on Saturday, 15-6.
In that game, Sullivan (1 assist) recorded a hat trick, and fellow teammates’ Max Maggipinto (1 goal) and Chlastawa had four assists apiece. Mike Visconti and Lunardini finished with a goal apiece.
Reynolds combined with Ryan Reed for 16 Westfield saves.

Mustangs down Saints
Monson 15, St. Mary 9

Anthony Allard scored a game-high five goals, and Gabe Marquee netted a hat trick in Monson’s road win at Boardman Field.

Padraig Smith (3 goals, 2 assists) netted five points for St. Mary. Saints’ Aaron Blanchard and Dekoa Noel scored two goals apiece. Sam LaBombard and John Spear each had one.
St. Mary goalie Devon Ugolik finished with 10 saves.

SOFTBALL
Rams roll
Southwick 12, Granby 1

Tori DellaGuistina (3-for-5, run, RBI), Brittany Penland (2-for-3, run), and Sydney Rogers (3-for-5, double, walk, three runs, five RBIs) each had multi-hit outings at the plate for Southwick. Rams’ ace Emily Lachtara struck out eight batters in four innings of work. She allowed two hits and walked two.

Hornets sting Gators
McCann Tech 19, Gateway 1 (5 inn.)

Gabby Dame, Dayna Britland, and Ava Auclair had the lone hits for Gateway.

GIRLS’ TENNIS
Saints chase Colts
St. Mary 4, Chicopee Comp 1

St. Mary’s swept singles play with Nos. 1-3 Jessica Demers (6-3, 6-0), Jessica Crosby (6-1, 6-3), and Casey Rutledge (6-1, 6-4) all enjoying wins in their respective matches.
St. Mary’s Fiona Chen and Ashley Forest defeated Chicopee Comp’s Magen Lindsey and Hope Gauthier, 7-5, 6-4.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Westfield 12, Mount Greylock 11

Olivia Chaoush scored the game-winning goal with 1:18 remaining to cap a thrilling come-from-behind victory Saturday as Westfield stunned Mount Greylock.
The Bombers’ defense made a key stop with 12 ticks left on the clock to preserve the win.
Chaoush led all scorers with five goals. She was helped out on offense by Westfield’s Rachel Gelina (2 goals, 2 assists) and Brooke Keeney (3 assists).
Lexi Levere (5 saves) and Yvonne Headley (7 saves) were strong in goal for Westfield. They were backed by defensemen Marissa Otero, Janice Christian, Miranda Boudreau, Sam Martin.
