AGAWAM – It may not be a gold medal, but the Southwick Rams high school golf team is celebrating a well-deserved victory of sorts.
Senior Jagger Turgeon finished with a round of 83, one off medalist Joe Conkey’s (Pathfinder) 82 to help lead Southwick to a second-place finish in the West Division 2 golf championship Monday at Crestview Country Club in Agawam.
“It’s a thrill,” said Southwick coach Al Selden, who, in his seventh season, posted the team’s highest finish in school history. The Rams shot a combined team total of 354, behind only Belchertown’s 348, which will qualify them for the states next Mon., Oct. 31 at Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown.

“To make it to states as a team is a pretty good accomplishment,” Selden said. “We’re going to have a good time.”
The blustery conditions were less-than-desirable for several golfers. Southwick braved the tricky weather, nearly blowing away the entire field as a team. The Rams only obstacle were the Belchertown Orioles, who primarily play a D1 schedule during the regular season.
Bradley Durand shot an 86 for Southwick, followed by James Longhi (91), Chris Molta (94), Matthew Garrity (94), and Christopher Baker (101).

D1 CHAMPIONSHIP: East Longmeadow’s Noah Peterson shot a first-place 76, and Longmeadow won the West Division 1 golf championship Monday at The Ranch Golf Club in Southwick.
Agawam’s Matteo Godek, and Longmeadow’s Michael Bechard and Connor Phillips all tied for second with a 78. Jack Hogan had Westfield’s best finish with an 81. Bombers’ Liam Whitman and Matt Bonsall each shot 90s. Ari Schwartz had a 94.

Heather Lannon scored two goals – one off a pass from Chantal Parenteau and one off a direct kick well outside the 18 – and Liliya Stepanchuk had one for Westfield Tech. Bri Hoffman assisted.
“I’m really pleased with the way the Tigers stepped up against an opponent that has always been tough on us,” Westfield Tech coach Lyle Washington said.
Mustangs topple Rams

Lilly Fabian scored two goals, and Monson cruised to a home victory. Southwick’s Alex Mello also scored a goal.
Southwick goalies Tori Richburg and Hannah Gerrish combined for nine saves. The Rams fell to 9-4-3 overall.
Gators knotted

Samantha Belardo scored the lone Gateway goal, and Gators’ goalie Becca Herman made a save in net in the team’s tie.
Gateway improved to 11-2-4.
Goodreau extends points’ streak

Seventh grader Allie Goodreau scored the lone goal for St. Mary. Emmalina Toma had the assist.
Goodreau has now scored a goal or assisted in every game this season.

Mia Kelley scored twice, MaryKate Wysocki scored once, and Erin Berthiaume (6 saves) earned a shutout in net for Agawam. Westfield goalie Erin McDermott finished with 13 saves.

Three different Longmeadow players scored to down Westfield. Lancers’ Kyra Ashe had one goal and one assist, and Kelsey Low and Haley Daigneault scored a goal apiece.
Longmeadow goalie Lindsay Pelliccia (1 save) earned a shutout in net. Westfield keeper Gwen Smith made seven saves.

St. Mary kept its playoff hopes alive with a tie against PVCA at Westfield Middle School North.
St. Mary raced out to a 2-0 lead. Pioneer Valley rallied for three straight goals, but the Saints answered back with a game-tying goal with 15 minutes left.
“We could’ve used the win, but we’re still right in the midst of a playoff spot,” St. Mary coach Bill Lamirande said.
Aaron Blanchard scored two goals, and freshman Joe Lucardi scored his first varsity goal, a 50-yarder. Blanchard and Drew Collins each had an assist.
St. Mary must win its final two games to qualify for the postseason.

Brandon Castor and Connor Geddis scored one goal apiece in Southwick’s road shutout. Rams’ goalie Nick Chambers (five saves) earned a shutout.

Jayden Marge had a hand in both scoring plays, assisting Nick Cooper and scoring a goal of his own. Gators’ keeper Shane Mastello finished with two saves for a shutout.

Southwick improved to 8-6 with a resounding victory. Emily Martin had two goals and one assist, Erica Pickard finished with a goal and assist, Alyssa Pompi had two assists, Lyle Massoia and Alex Grimaldi each scored a goal, and Montana Conizzaro had an assist.

Paul Whalley scored two goals to lead Southwick. Whalley scored on a pass from Eric Haynes and on a PK. The Rams improved to 9-2-3.
