WESTFIELD – Westfield Technical Academy is sending 37 of its top students to the SkillsUSA District Leadership and Skills Conference on Friday March 17, 2017 at McCann Tech High School, in North Adams, MA. The students, who were recommended by their shop teachers to represent their shops, will be competing against peers from nine other area career and technical vocational schools.

According to Skills USA advisor Maureen Baillargeon, the district competition was originally supposed to take place on Tuesday, March 14, but was cancelled due to the snowstorm. Several students who were recommended to participate are unable to attend the rescheduled date due to conflicts. These students include Kali Landry in Advertising Design; Andrew Daniels and Daniel Thibeault in Automotive Service Technology.
At districts, students will be taking 3 written tests: A shop competency test, a SkillsUSA/work ready test, and an OSHA safety tie-breaker test. Those who get a gold or silver medal will advance to the state competition April 27-29, in Marlborough, MA. A national competition will be held in Louisville, Kentucky for those that win a gold medal at the state competition.
In addition to Baillargeon, the students will be accompanied by faculty advisors Wayne Bush, Roger Cardin and Philip Mucciarone.
