Granville Select Board race goes down to the wire

GRANVILLE – Tuesday’s election for the open seat on the Select Board in Granville had quite the interesting result as challenger Nicole Berndt narrowly edged out incumbent Richard Woodger by one vote.

According to Granville Town Clerk Donna Fillion, it was the first time anyone at the town hall has seen an election race end that close. After counting out the votes the first time, Fillion and her helpers notified both candidates that they would be doing a recount. The town clerk couldn’t believe just how close it was. The results were Berndt’s 182 votes to Woodger’s 181 votes.

“It was exciting,” said Fillion.

With Berndt patiently waiting at the Gran-Val Scoop, where she works, she was notified about the official result late on Tuesday night.

“It was a crazy night,” said Berndt. “That’s just insane.”

Berndt is also very happy to see the large turnout of voters from residents and the impact that had.

“Your vote really does matter and really does count,” said Berndt. “It was just the perfect illustration of why it’s so important.”

Berndt will officially be sworn in as a member of the Select Board at the annual town meeting on May 14.
