HYANNIS – John P. Underwood, lovingly known as “Gabe,” passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at his Hyannis home on September 23rd, 2026. Raised in
Worcester, he was the son of Mary W. Underwood and the late James J. Underwood, and brother of the late Michael F. Underwood. He is survived by his siblings David (Linda), Jody, Judith, and Jamie (Thomas), along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A lifelong sports fan and devoted supporter of New England teams, John played hockey and baseball in his youth. He attended Blessed Sacrament Church, graduated from St. John’s High School, served in the U.S. Army and Massachusetts Army National Guard, and earned degrees from Fitchburg State College and the University of Phoenix. He treasured his lifelong friendships with the Dense Pack.
John dedicated his career to helping students. At South High School in Worcester, he supported students facing emotional and behavioral challenges and coached football and girls’ basketball. Later, at JTEC in Hyannis, he helped young adults earn their GEDs and HiSETs. Colleagues remembered him as a friend, confidant, and mentor who made a lasting difference in many lives.
An avid reader, sports enthusiast, gifted cook, and generous friend, John especially cherished time with family and friends—on the Outer Cape, at the beach and golf course, and at the Beachcomber and Bomb Shelter.
John’s kindness, humor, knowledge, and guidance touched many people. He will be deeply missed.
