WESTFIELD-For parents seeking a date night or needing time for a last-minute holiday shopping trip, the YMCA of Greater Westfield will offer a Kids Night Out on Friday, Dec. 14.
“We offer a monthly gathering for children to meet tons of other children in all age groups,” said Patrick Lusteg, camp/program director.
Lusteg noted that YMCA memberships are not required to attend the Kids Night Out program which is conducted on the second Friday of the month from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
“It’s a good night for children, ages 4 to 11, to interact with other kids and put away the electronics,” said Lusteg.
On Dec. 14, a host of winter and holiday themed arts and craft activities are planned as well as closing out the evening viewing “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” starring Jim Carrey. Cheese pizza will be served during the evening and parents have the option to provide their children with a meal.
“Traditionally on Kids Night Out we provide snacks,” said Lusteg.
The festive evening planned for kids will feature a host of board and card games and playing with Legos, as well as choosing a group game including kickball, basketball or swimming.
“Many of the kids choose to go swimming,” said Lusteg, adding if a child is new to the YMCA, lifeguards will provide a swim test to determine the child’s swimming level.
“We provide life jackets if needed,” said Lusteg.
For children participating in Kids Night Out, Lusteg notes that participants should have a backpack with appropriate clothing as needed and a swim suit and towel if the child will be using the pool. Closed toed shoes are also recommended, added Lusteg.
“Kids Night Out is a great opportunity to introduce children to all of the activities we offer at the YMCA which includes a tour of the gym, work-out area, basketball court, and swimming pool,” said Lusteg. “We also have amazing counselors to meet who provide a welcome and warm sense of community.”
While the program is structured from 5:30 to 9:30, Lusteg added that parents can drop off their children at any time from 5:30 on and pick them up when it is convenient by 9:30. An emergency contact and medical form must be completed for each child.
The cost of the Kids Night Out is $15 for the first child and $10 for each additional sibling. Pre-registration is not required but can be made by visiting the YMCA’s reception desk at 67 Court St. or by calling (413) 568-8631.
