WESTFIELD – The Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC) will meet on Thursday (March 14) at 6:30 p.m. at the Westfield Technical Academy to discuss the book, “Bright Kids Who Can’t Keep Up,” by Ellen Braaten, PhD and Brian Willoughby PhD.
Braaten and Willoughby are child psychologists who have evaluated hundreds of children each year at the Learning and Emotional Assessment Program (LEAP) at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Their book is all about processing speed, and asks the question does your child tend to do everything slower than their peers? They say it could be due to slow processing speed, which can affect every area of a child’s life, including “slow reading and writing, slow response to requests or questions, poor memory recall, slow completion of work, trouble sustaining attention, not able to keep up with the fast pace of the classroom, problems finishing almost anything in an allotted period of time.”
SEPAC has invited Karen Canta Boydston, Ed.D., a Westfield Public School psychologist to lead the discussion and answer any questions.
Childcare will be available. For more information, contact [email protected].
