SOUTHWICK – The Congamond Road project resumed on Monday after being put on hold during the winter season.
According to information from the Southwick Police Department, Mass DOT (Department of Transportation) informed town officials that the project was going to resume.
Pereira Construction of Ludlow, Mass., contractor, is continuing phase one of the project which consists of widening the road, constructing sidewalks, and reclaiming the road surface. Dick Grannells of the Southwick DPW added that Pereira has resumed their work on the eastern end of Congamond Road by the Suffield town line.
The work on Congamond Road will continue to the top of the hill on Congamond Road, which is west of Sheep Pasture Road. Mass DOT, who is overseeing the project, wants to have phase one completed in the next six to eight weeks so as not to affect access to one of the boat launches for Congamond Lake during the summer months when it becomes a much busier area.
“That’s the area where you’ve got lots of people backing up boat trailers,” said Grannells.
Grannells went on to say that people traveling down Congamond Road should expect delays as two lanes will be condensed into one lane. Police officers will be on scene to help direct vehicles.
Once phase one is completed, phase two will consist of construction from the top of the hill on Congamond Road to College Hwy. While a crew is conducting phase two, another crew will be going back to phase one and completing finish work.
In June 2018, it was reported that the Congamond Road project had begun with Pereira working on below grade utilities and starting the drainage process. A few months later in September of 2018, most of the drainage work was complete.
The project is being funded by Mass DOT for $4.1 million and is expected to finish at some point in the fall of 2019.
