SOUTHWICK – At their meeting on Wednesday night at the Southwick Town Hall, the Community Preservation Committee (CPC) voted in favor of approving the wording for a warrant article that will be presented at the annual town meeting on May 21 to take $140,000 out of their open space funds in order to help fund the playground project at Powder Mill School.

Being overseen by the Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School District, the project is anticipated to cost a total of $678,000. The project consists of a new playground and an outdoor learning space with a new rubber surface. The work on the playground will also include making it handicap accessible and also having more shade created near the playground for the warmer day.
The project doesn’t just include work on the playground as a storm water mitigation system will be installed on the Powder Mill School property and an expanded and repaved parking lot.
It’s been estimated by the designer and project manager, Tighe & Bond, the playground portion will cost $259,700 while the site work will cost $252,000. A 20% contingency will add $103,100 along with $63,200 in expenses for the design work.
According to a February newsletter from Powder Mill School Principal Erin Currier and Assistant Principal Cherie Curran, the plan is to have the project open for bids in early spring and have a bid awarded at some point in late May.
