Flag sales open doors for summer camp

WESTFIELD – Summer is a special time for families – getaways for a day or longer – and for children, summer camp can be another outlet for adventure.

Starting May 10, the Westfield Kiwanis Club is offering children in the Greater Westfield area, ages 5 to 14, the chance to attend a summer camp of their choice through its Park of Honor Scholarship Program.

“The purpose of the scholarship is to assist families who have a veteran, active military member, police officer, firefighter or first responder as a parent/guardian or grandparent,” said Kellie Brown, president, Westfield Kiwanis.

Brown noted the decisions regarding applications will not be based on financial need.

“We will award up to $200 per child until funds are depleted,” said Brown, adding that applications will be placed into a pool and winners will be drawn randomly. The drawing will take place at a Kiwanis meeting prior to June 6.

“Scholarships will be paid directly to the chosen camp,” said Brown.

Brown emphasized that funding for the scholarships is made possible by the sale of flags from the Park of Honor event conducted annually in November on the front lawn of the Westfield Middle School.

The Park of Honor was established in 2017 to honor all those who serve in the military, on police and fire departments, and as first responders. Rows of flags are displayed with a ribbon on each flag containing information about the person the flag honors. Individuals, families and businesses are welcome to sponsor a flag in honor of a person (past or present).

Throughout November, area residents are encouraged to walk among the 3’ x 5’ flags and read about the individuals who have given in “many different ways to their country,” added Brown.

“The Park of Honor serves as a reminder and a tribute to all those who served or are presently serving to protect our country,” said Brown. “This year we have $5,000 to give away thanks to the sale of flags for our Park of Honor.”

During 2018, $2,200 was distributed in scholarships from money raised during the inaugural 2017 Park of Honor event.

“The purpose of the scholarship is to honor those parent/guardians and grandparents that serve or have served to protect our community on a daily basis,” said Brown.

Application forms can be downloaded at westfieldkiwanis.org and must be received by the Kiwanis Club by June 1.
