WESTFIELD- The Westfield Petsense manager announced in a Facebook post Wednesday that it will be closing its doors in Little River Plaza on Dec. 7.
The closure of the pet food and supply store comes after the corporate wing of the national company informed store manager Brenda Vincent that the overhead costs were too high. Following negotiations, the decision was made at the Petsense corporate level to let the lease for the store run out on Dec. 7.
While Petsense is a national chain, there are only four locations in New England, including the East Main Street location. Most of the rest of the 170 locations are situated in the southern United States.
Vincent said that Dec. 7 is the latest day that the store will close, but that they may do so before then if their shelves are empty. They are not ordering any more supplies.
In the meantime, Petsense will also be collecting cans of pet food and other supplies that can be donated to the Westfield Regional Animal Shelter and the Westfield Homeless Cat Project. Vincent said that the store has been doing these can drives since it opened in 2014.
The drive will continue as long as the store remains open. The donations received will be split between the two organizations based on what they get and what their needs are.
