SOUTHWICK – Residents will have extra time to pay personal and property tax during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The Southwick Select Board April 7, during a meeting hosted on zoom and open to the public, unanimously approved delaying payment of the taxes until June 1. Bills state payment is due May 1. Board members also voted to extend deadlines for dog licenses and transfer station stickers.
Select Board Chair Russell Fox met with Town Clerk Michelle Hill, who also serves at the town’s treasurer and collector, as well as Chief Administrative Officer Karl Stinehart to discuss giving leeway to some payments.
“We’d like to extend dog licenses until July 1, and transfer station stickers an additional 30 days,” said Fox. Transfer station stickers expire June 30. Residents with current stickers will now have until July 31 to renew.
Water bills, however, have not been extended.
“The Town Clerk wanted me to make sure people understand this doesn’t affect the water bills, which are due June 9,” said Fox.
Fox said there was also a discussion about the town’s $3 million assessment payment to the school district, which is due May 1. Fox asked if Selectmen Joseph Deedy and Douglas Moglin would approve offering a 50 percent payment on May 1 followed by an additional payment June 1.
“I think it’s a good idea to hold off since we’re pushing out some of our bills,” said Moglin.
Deedy said he met with Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional Superintendent Jennifer Willard via zoom and played “bad cop.”
“They’re prepared for any conversations you may have,” Deedy said.
