WESTFIELD-Horticulture students from Westfield Technical Academy will be selling a variety of greens, centerpieces and poinsettias during a holiday plant sale on Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the greenhouses on Greylock Street.
“Students are working on greens that include wreaths, boxwood trees, assorted holiday centerpieces, and kissing balls,” said Nathan Sperry, horticulture technology instructor.
The holiday event will also feature poinsettias and Sperry expects there will be more than 100 different plants and arrangements to choose from on sale. The greenhouses are located behind the school and signage will direct shoppers to the plant sale.
“Typically we distribute the poinsettias at the schools in Westfield and we appreciate the support from the staff at those schools who purchase our poinsettias,” said Sperry. “This year we did distribute them again.”
Sperry noted that the holiday plant sale is a new offering in the community and COVID-19 protocols will be in place to ensure the greenhouses are not crowded.
“We will have students working on arrangements on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and expect a student or two who will be assisting shoppers during the sale,” said Sperry.
Prices for poinsettias will range from $6 to $20, and greens will range in price from $10 to $25. Purchases can be made with cash or by check.
“Poinsettias are grown from cuttings that happen in late spring and when we receive them, we grow them out and are responsible to get them to color up,” said Sperry.
Sperry noted that the money raised from the sale will benefit the department.
“Funds can be used to update old equipment or make repairs,” said Sperry.
