WESTFIELD – Donald Edward LaPoint passed away peacefully at home on April 7, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was born in Westfield, son of the late Harry LaPoint and Anne (Pitoniak) LaPoint and was a lifelong resident of Westfield. Donald attended St. Mary’s Schools and was a parishioner of St. Mary’s. He later graduated from Westfield Trade School in 1962.
Shortly after graduation, he met the love of his life Joyce (Feist). They would share a loving marriage for 57 years. Donald and Joyce have two cherished sons, Steven LaPoint and Christopher LaPoint (Jennifer). He was blessed with three grandchildren Ryan, Emma and Colby. He loved being around his children and grandchildren and enjoyed supporting them at their baseball, softball and soccer games as well as swim meets. Donald also leaves behind his beloved family dog, Sadie.
Upon graduation, Donald began a career in Electroplating. He worked for nearly 45 years at Westfield Electroplating and Omega Metal Processing. He was a pleasure to those he worked with offering them humor and a strong work ethic. He retired in 2010.
Donald and Joyce built their dream house “up on the hill” in 1976. They enjoyed their beautiful views, peace and quiet, and endless summers around the pool. He loved nothing more than a good party, especially his labor day picnics which were held for 25 consecutive years. Donald and Joyce shared vacations in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Germany; as well as family vacations in California, Arizona, Florida and Rhode Island. Donald had special trips to WrestleMania with Steven in Las Vegas and the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA with Chris and his grandsons.
Donald had many interests. He was an avid golfer holding membership at Edgewood Golf Course and Tekoa Country Club for over 30 years and has 2 hole-in-one’s to his credit. Donald participated in a 30-and-over hockey league retiring just shy of his 50th birthday. He was a sports enthusiast supporting his New York Yankees and New York Rangers. He loved restoring old cars including a 34 Ford Coupe and a 37 Ford Pickup. He entered many local car shows and even the Adirondack Nationals in Lake George, NY earning numerous awards.
In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, he leaves sisters Susan Sokolowski (James), Lois Barlow (Phil), Aunt Dorothy Taudel, mother-in-law Mabel Lemieux, sister-in-law Jean Walsh (Thomas). He also leaves numerous dear family members and friends.
The calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 13th from 4-7 pm at the Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield. The funeral will be held on Friday, April 14th at 9:30 am at the funeral home followed by a Mass in St. Mary’s Church at 10:30 am. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
