WESTFIELD – After lengthy visits from her children, many grandchildren, and her great-grandson, Anne Weston Lichtenberger, 96, (1930-2026) died in palliative care at Baystate Medical Center.
She was born in Washington, D.C., to the late Lt. Standish Weston and Margaret K. Terrell. After graduating from Cranford High School, Anne studied at Mount Holyoke College, earning a Bachelor of Arts with distinction and majoring in Art History with a minor in Mathematics. There she met Arthur T. Lichtenberger from Amherst College on a blind date. They married in the fall of 1952. After marriage, they settled in Edgewood, Maryland, while Arthur finished his service in the army at Aberdeen Proving Ground. Two years later, they moved to Scotch Plains, New Jersey, until their mutual love of Western MA called them to Westfield.
In Westfield, Anne was a devoted member of The Episcopal Church of the Atonement. Her activities included serving as Chair of the Haitian Street Fair, serving on the Altar Guild and the Vestry, and taking on other volunteer roles. Anne also joined OSL (Order of St. Luke) and attended conferences on the ministry of Christian Healing. She used God’s gift of healing at church and was a dedicated member of the prayer chain and prayer team at Atonement.
Mrs. Lichtenberger, as her students called her, served as a substitute in the Westfield School system. Later, she acquired her teaching certificate in English and taught for many years at Westfield High School. Some of her courses were part of the International Baccalaureate Program.
Anne served as president of Sarah Gillette Services for the Elderly. She was also a trustee and president of Shurtleff Children’s Services, which actively provides grant funding to youth and community programs in Westfield.
At the time of her death, Anne was not only the oldest member of the Hopefully Well Affected Club but also its longest-serving member. HWA has deep roots in Westfield dating back to the late 19th century. From the minute she joined in 1968, Anne loved the friendships and outreach this association offered. In her spare time, Anne loved gardening, reading, traveling, and sewing.
Anne was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arthur T. Lichtenberger, on February 20th, 2022.
Anne is survived by her two devoted daughters, Carol (Jeffrey) Fishwick and Cynthia (Mark) Clements, and her devoted son, Arthur W. (Elisabeth) Lichtenberger, her loving sister Sue (Tom) Anthony, seven cherished grandchildren, who called her Nanne: James Fishwick (Stephanie), Anne Fishwick Wright (Michael), Allan (Cynthia) Taylor, Andrew (Jisiel) Taylor, Lydia Lichtenberger Slotten (Matt), Arthur E. Lichtenberger (Lily), and Emily Lichtenberger, and two great-grandchildren, Jarvis Fishwick and Arthur Rose Lichtenberger, with another on the way, and two caring nieces Kate Diliddo and Jessica Anthony.
Services will be held on Saturday, November 14th, at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Church of the Atonement, 36 Court Street, Westfield. The family would like to warmly thank the wonderful palliative care team and the staff on S14 at Baystate Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Church of the Atonement or a charitable organization of your choice. www.firtionadms.com
