WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School field hockey team cut it as close to the vest as possible, winning with no clicks left on the clock Monday.
Lexi Minicucci scored the game-winning goal on a penalty corner with no time left to lift Westfield past visiting East Longmeadow 1-0 in a thriller.
“What an exciting field hockey game Westfield had,” said Westfield coach Karen Gomez, whose team continued to surge. The Bombers, off to their best start in recent memory, are now 5-2-2.
“Westfield picked it up in the final minutes of the game,” Gomez said. “I couldn’t ask for a team to finish any better.”
Karly Mastello (1 save) and Jess Hale (0 saves) earned the shutout in net for Westfield.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Southwick 3, Frontier 0
Jess Teodore scored two goals, Izzy Burns had one, and Megan Zabik (4 saves) recorded a shutout in net as Southwick blanked Frontier.
Cassie Bay, Taylor LeClair, and Paige Cool had one assist apiece for the Rams.
Renaissance 3, Westfield Voc-Tech 1
Voc-Tech’s Bria Curran drove a Brandi VanGelder header into the net to cut Renaissance’s lead in half before the half. Elena Levkha set up the play with a corner kick.
Renaissance scored an own goal in the second half.
Megan Ilnicky finished with four saves for Voke.
JUNIOR VARSITY
Southwick 2, Frontier 1
Julia Inglueue scored on a pass from Lexi Glynn, and Glynn added a goal unassisted for Southwick. Rams’ goalie Ariel Bryant had two saves.
