Gateway’s Arel earns 6th shutout

HUNTINGTON – Gateway junior goalie Mike Arel recorded his sixth shutout of the season, and the Gators tied Greenfield 0-0 Monday at home.
“Our defense is good,” said Arel, who made a key save in the first half. He finished with three.
“We’re working real good with our communication,” Arel added. “That’s our strongest point. I think our offense is coming. We’re starting to put everything together.”
The junior goalie said the team continues to surprise – even its own fans.
“I think we’ve got a really good chance (to make tournament),” Arel said. “I think most people didn’t think we would, losing 11 seniors (to graduation).”
Arel said senior defender Ryan Fisk has been the cog in the middle of the Gators’ defense.
Gateway (3-2-3) dominated control in the second half, but failed to connect.
“Our touch wasn’t where I thought it would be,” said Gators’ coach Tim Gamble. “We were chipping and running. I’m not sure why it was so hard. We had so many opportunities.”
Gamble said fatigue factored into his team’s squandered chances late.
Westfield 2, Cathedral 2
Westfield’s Kyle Murphy scored two goals, and Sam Blake and Robert Bernadara split time in goal for the Bombers (1-2-4). Matt Lacroix had an assist.
Blake was injured on a controversial call when officials allowed Cathedral to pry away a ball that the goalie already had his hands on. The play resulted in a Panthers’ goal.
“Unfortunately we were the better team,” Westfield coach Gabe Crane said.
Crane said Rob Sullivan continues to shine with his spectacular midfield game.
