EAST LONGMEADOW – Westfield High School senior halfback John Toomey rushed for a long touchdown to give his team a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter on the road at East Longmeadow. But the Spartans answered back again, and again, and again…
East Longmeadow scored 49 unanswered points to trounce visiting Westfield 49-6 in a high school football game last night.
Five different players scored for East Longmeadow.
The scoring plays were, as follows, for the Spartans: a first quarter 3-yard touchdown run from Tanner Fazino (8:57); a 1-yard rush from Dan McGuill in the second quarter (3:27) followed by Shea Hunter’s 57-yard interception return for touchdown a few moments later (1:16); a McGuill to Sam Blake scoring strike through the air in the fourth quarter (11:15), followed by Blake’s 66-yard punt return for touchdown (9:44), and 44- and 31-yard touchdown runs from Michael Maggipinto late in the game.
A key play in the game came late in the second quarter with Westfield trailing 7-6.
Westfield faced a fourth-and-7 from the East Longmeadow 45. But rather than punt the ball and set up the Spartans deep in their own territory late in the first half, the Bombers elected to go for the first down and came up two yards short.
East Longmeadow took over near midfield, and scored. And scored. And scored some more.
Westfield, which has been on the road for five of its first six games, now sits at 1-5.
