SOUTHWICK – Decking the halls, giving gifts and celebrating the holidays with family and friends is a fun and hectic time of year. It is also a time when consumers tend to have more trash and recycling.
To assist residents, department of Public Works (DPW) Director Jeffrey Neece is opening the town transfer station on Thursdays the weeks of Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.
The Board of Selectmen last week asked Neece to open the station additional hours for residents. The transfer station is normally closed on Thursdays.
“We will definitely open and be accommodating,” said Neece.
Dec. 26 – 29, 2012 the transfer station will be open regular hours. Note: Thursday hours will be 8 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. on Dec. 27.
Jan.2 – 5, 2013 the transfer station will be open regular hours. Note: Thursday hours will be 8 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. on Jan. 3, 2013. Regular hours of the station are Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m. – 7:20 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. – 4:20 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 3:50 p.m.
The Springfield Materials Recovery facility offered guidelines for recycling during the holiday and winter months.
The following items should be included in paper recycling: corrugated cardboard boxes, paperboard gift boxes, greeting cards (except those with foil, metallic inks, or glitter), gift wrap, gift bags, tissue wrap (except those with foil, metallic inks, or glitter), paper shopping bags (any type of handle is okay), and catalogs and calendars.
Items that should not be recycled include ribbons, bows, and tinsel, packing peanuts and Styrofoam (re-usable, contact your local pack and ship store), holiday lights, plastic bags, and photographs.
Only residents of Southwick with current transfer station stickers are allowed in the station. Transfer Station stickers are available at Town Clerk’s office Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for an annual fee of $90. Stickers are also available for purchase using UniPay providing that one has a currently active sticker. A list of sticker fee discounts and items requiring additional fees is available on the town web site.
