WESTFIELD – The saga of the Western Massachusetts Division I girls’ swim championships have included twists and turns all along the way, so it should come as no surprise that Monday’s meet featured one more, well, surprise.
Northampton consistently earned points by placing among the leaders in many of the evening’s events to upset Westfield in a nail biter, 348-347.
State qualifying times were not recognized by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association as the eastern part of the state was unable to reschedule its sectional due to time and logistics issues after a devastating winter storm socked the northeast late last week, and forced the cancellation of the event.
Some of Westfield’s bright spots included: the 400-yard freestyle relay team (3rd, 3:44.01), Erin Lewis (100 yard breaststroke/2nd/1:10.55), Hope Walsh (500 yard freestyle/3rd/5:14.80), and the 200-yard medley relay team (2nd, 1:52.30).
Kelsey Veillette finished third in the diving championships last week, which were included in the team scores Monday.
