1:17 a.m.: found property, Westfield Middle School South, a patrol officer reports finding two bicycles at the school which were transported to the station for safekeeping;
2:01 a.m.: assist other agency, Airport Industrial Park Road at Buck Pond Road, a security officer from the Air National Guard unit requests police assistance setting up a perimeter around a suspicious package which was found and is awaiting examination by explosive ordinance disposal troops, the responding officer reports that the package was described as a six foot long by two feet high package tied up with a canvas covering, the air guard security officer reports the incident was resolved by 4:52 a.m.;
6:41 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, North Road, a patrol officer reports he observed a vehicle traveling at 54 mph in a 40 mph zone, the vehicle was stopped, the operator’s license was found to be suspended and he was found to be the subject of an outstanding warrant, Anthony Dejesus, 31, of 70 Harrison Ave., Springfield, was arrested for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and on the warrant;
10:05 a.m.: found property, Holyoke Road, a patrol officer reports that while investigating an unrelated matter he observed a purse hanging from a tree, the officer reports the purse was waterlogged and contained a document indicating the owner who could not be immediately contacted, the purse was brought to the station for safekeeping;
12:34 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Shaker Road, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop, the vehicle’s registration was found to be expired and it was towed to the police impound yard;
1:04 p.m.: accident, Washington Street at Court Street, multiple callers report a car crash with injuries, see photo in the Thursday edition of The Westfield News;
2:06 p.m.: animal complaint, Westfield Animal Shelter, 178 Apremont Way, the director of animal control operations reports a person surrendered a female golden retriever/poodle mix dog,
2:08 p.m.: fire, Main Street, a caller reports a brush fire near the bus stop, the responding firefighters reports a small patch of burning grass was extinguished;
2:20 p.m.: fire, Sunset Drive, a caller reports an attended brush fire has spread out of control, the responding firefighters report the permitted burn was extinguished;
2:39 p.m.: recreational vehicle complaint, Airport Industrial Park Road, a detail officer reports he stopped an ATV operating on city property, the vehicle was towed and a responding officer provided the operator with a courtesy transport to his home a short distance across the Holyoke border;
2:41 p.m.: breaking and entering, Montgomery Street, a detective reports examination of recovered property indicated that an unreported burglary had occurred, the officer reports that the victim said that he had not reported an incident in which forcible entry was made to his home because he assumed that the intruder had been his estranged wife, the man said that he had not realized his home had been burgled;
3:16 p.m.: animal complaint, Cycle Street, a caller report a ten-year-old boy playing with her son was bitten by a dog, the responding officer reports the caller said that the boys had been playing when a neighbor’s 14-year-old German shepherd/Labrador retriever mix dog escaped its fenced enclosure and bit the boy’s leg, the boy was transported to Noble Hospital by his mother, the officer reports the dog is not current with inoculations and the owner was advised was to quarantine the dog and expect a visit from the director of animal control operations;
5:26 p.m.: found property, Janis Road, a resident came to the station to report finding a gun on his property, see story in the Thursday edition of The Westfield News;
6:33 p.m.: assist citizen, West Silver Street, a caller reports that she is locked out of her home and asks for assistance re-entering the house even if it is necessary to break down the door, the responding firefighters report entry was made without damage to the door;
8:38 p.m.: suspicious person, East Main Street, a caller from an East Main Street fast food restaurant reports that an apparently intoxicated couple was falling over and making other customers uncomfortable before leaving in a described vehicle, the responding officer reports he found the vehicle and when he stopped it observed the operator to be obviously under the influence of something, the officer reports the man was unable to stand without assistance and was barely conscious, the vehicle was towed to the police impound yard and the pre-tow inventory revealed a variety of pills and a quantity of marijuana, the officer noted that some of the pills had been prescribed, Willie J. French, 28, of 50 Christopher St., was arrested for operating a motor vehicle to endanger, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, possession of a Class B drug, possession of a Class C drug and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana;
8:57 p.m.: disturbance, Mechanic Street, a caller reports she was pushed into a door during an argument with a neighbor, the responding officer reports that two women had drawn a crowd when they became engaged in a pushing match which was sparked by a dispute over a parking space, no charges were filed;
11:27 p.m.: vandalism, Pearl Street, a caller reports a vehicle has been tagged with graffiti, the responding officer reports he spoke with the mother of the vehicle’s registered owner who said that her son is away on vacation.
