Summertime at Southwick Beach

SOUTHWICK – Now that summer has officially begun, the Town Beach is set to open this week.
Parks and Recreation Commissioner Daniel Call said as long as the water tests are fine, the beach will open Thursday, June 27.
This year, the men’s room was completely revamped as part of the commission’s improvement program.
“We have a five-year plan to update the beach for safety and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements,” said Call. “This year the men’s room has been completely rebuilt and the ladies room will be done next year.”
Last year new handrails were installed and a sidewalk built that gives accessibility for all right to the beach.
“We have a cart someone with a disability can use to get from the top of the hill down to the water,” said Call.
There are also funds for a horseshoe pit to be installed.
Call said the Town Beach is a gem that is underused. To promote the beach, Call said the commission is considering placing flyers at the Rail Trail kiosks.
“We would like more people to come down and enjoy it,” Call said.
The hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Lifeguards are on duty at all times. Minors need to be accompanied by an adult at all times. Fees are $2 for town residents, $3 for those from out of state or out of town, $1 for children ages 7-13, and free for seniors 62 and over, children six and under, and active military.
This summer, swim lessons are taking place at Southwick Town Beach through the Westfield YMCA on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the summer. Each session runs for two weeks: July 1 – 12, July 15 – 26, July 29 – Aug. 9 and Aug. 5 – 16.
Cost for Y members and Southwick residents is $46. For more information call 413-568-8631 or visit on the web www.westfieldymca.org.
