SOUTHWICK – The Parks and Recreation Commission is preparing for the town’s annual fireworks display, set for July 19.
The commission met this week to iron out details for the event, which had logistical challenges this year. Traditionally, the fireworks are set off from school department grounds during the annual Fireman’s Carnival. This year, because of construction at the schools, School Superintendent John Barry will not allow the fireworks there.
Originally, the school department was not going to allow the carnival. Barry instead recommended using the baseball outfields and the School Committee approved the use in May. This is a bit closer to the road than in the past.
“It would be 125 yards closer than it was before,” Barry said.
Commission Chairman Kelly Magni said he has been scrambling to find an alternative site to set off the display.
“I checked with the owner of the field across the street, but he thinks it will be too high,” said Magni. “I talked to Tom Calabrese, too, but they’re going to be planting.”
The final alternative was the American Legion, Mani said. After meeting this week, the Legion agreed to allow fireworks on their property. Magni said they would set up in the pits of the motocross track.
“There’s a fence there and a row of trees, which acts as a natural barrier,” Mani said.
Because of this barrier, he asked Emergency Management Director Charles Dunlap if his team could provide security around the perimeter.
“I could probably give you five to seven people,” Dunlap said, adding he was supportive of the commission.
The Parks and Recreation Commission members are also planning to sell ice-cream and snow cones at the event, which takes place July 18-21 on Powder Mill Road. The carnival will spread out on the school grounds.
Rain date for the fireworks is July 20. The Fireman’s Carnival this year also includes the Southwick Rotary Club’s annual Grillin’ Daze, set for July 21.
