EAST LONGMEADOW – The East Longmeadow High School swim team, previously unbeaten across Western Massachusetts, won nine of 12 events against the still undefeated Lady Bombers of Westfield. But the Whip City left a lasting impression, winning enough second- and third-place finishes to pull off the incredible 55-47 win Friday on the road against the Spartans.
“It was a phenomenally, incredible meet,” an emphatic Westfield coach Tom Lewis said following Friday’s huge meet against two unbeaten powerhouse swim teams. “It was our strength and our depth that overtook their front line superstars.
Westfield (9-0) set the tone as Hope Walsh, Erin Lewis, Genna Senecal, and Jordan Jacobson combined to win the medley relay in 1:57.08. Lewis, who won the 100 breaststroke (1:10.11), also combined with Lauren Longley, Walsh, and Jacobson to win capture first in the 200 free relay (1:45.33), a season best.
“It was an exciting meet,” Lewis said.
All that remains between Westfield and a perfect regular season is a potential roadblock Tuesday at Minnechaug.
