U.S. Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Jordan R. Sabonis graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Sabonis is a 2012 graduate of home-schooling in Westfield.
Hartwick College senior Hannah Placzek, daughter of Kathleen MacLean and Vincent Placzek of Westfield has been named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2014 semester. Inclusion on the Hartwick Dean’s List is an indication of excellent academic work, including the completion of a full course load with at least a 3.5 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale. BURLINGTON, VT – Sylvia Lane has been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2014 semester at the University of Vermont. Lane, from Southwick, MA, is a senior Biology major. To be named to the dean’s list, students must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and rank in the top 20 percent of their class in their respective college or school. Chartered in 1791, UVM was the first college or university in the United States that did not give preference to a religious sect in its charter. UVM now has 9,958 undergraduates in seven schools and colleges, 1,317 graduate students and 459 medical students.

The criteria for the WPI Dean’s List differs from most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average (GPA). Instead, WPI defines the Dean’s List by the amount of work completed at the A level in courses and projects.

Westfield Resident Thomas Hoctor Returns from Venice Following Intensive Research Project
WORCESTER- Thomas Hoctor of Westfield, a junior majoring in environmental engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), recently completed an intense, hands-on research project in Venice. The project was titled The Evolution of Venice Through Mapping Technology.
At WPI, all undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to addresses an important societal need or issue. About two-thirds of students complete a project at one of the university’s more than 40 off-campus project centers, which are located around the world. A signature element of the innovative undergraduate experience at WPI, the project-based curriculum offers students the opportunity to apply their scientific and technical knowledge to develop thoughtful solutions to real problems that affect the quality of people’s lives–and make a difference before they graduate.

Southwick Native Kenneth Potts Named to Dean’s List at Ithaca College
