WESTFIELD – All of the 17 projects from the Westfield HIgh School Science and Engineering Fair that competed at the March 7 Regional Science Fair at Smith College will advance to the state contest at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on May 1 and 2.
“All of our kids did really well. It was a really good fair,” said Science, Technology and Engineering Supervisor Lauren Figy.
First place went to WHS junior Suvin Sundararajan for Functionalized Polylactide Filament for Additive Manufacturing. Sundararajan will also be competing for a spot at the International Science Fair in Anaheim, CA, May 10 to 15. “Suvin is super excited,” Figy said.
Sundararajan also received a Naval Science Award, one of two bestowed. The other Naval Science Award went to WHS freshman Samantha Adamtsev for The Accessible Tuba. Adamtsev also received the Smith College Community Outreach Award.
The Smith College Creativity Award went to Westfield Technical Academy sophomores Alec Smith and Dacota Durkee for Making Cell Phones Safe on Airplanes.
Second place awards went to Antoinette Reid for Plastic Particles; Elizabeth Regnier and Catherine Morrisey for Comparing ImageJ to Invasive Tissue Extraction; Erika Kovaski for Calling All Bacteria with a 3D Printer; Imma Kayzakian for The Ability of ZnW and TiO2 to mitigate the negative effects of UV radiation on planarian regeneration; Kaitlin Price for Natural ant repellant; Adamtsev, and Zachariah Gravel-Blaney and Emma Mazeika for The Effects of Germicidal Radiation on E. Coli K-12.
Third place awards went to Aaron Muldrew, Smith and Durkee, Anthony Suhocki and Reid Hannan, Charles Przechocki, Mackenzie Rae, Yana Chumakova and Ziyad Ghalayini.
Honorable mention awards went to James Coach of WTA, and Max Loper and Ethan Narkiewicz
“I’m so proud of the students. They really represented Westfield well, and Smith College was a great partner,” Figy said.
