American Legion seeking scholarship applicants

WESTFIELD—The city’s American Legion Post 124 is offering multiple scholarships to students in the area and want residents to apply.legion logo

There will be a total of seven scholarships available to students who are members of the American Legion or who has a family member who is part of the organization. The scholarships range from $500 to $1,000 and can be applied for online.

“The reason we do the scholarships is because we feel it’s really important to educate our youth,” William Spradlin, communications coordinator for Post 124, said. “It’s the most important thing we can do, those are our future leaders.”

Spradlin said that the scholarships are for any current or prospective college students, but must be at least a senior in high school.

Additional eligibility requirements include students having a minimum 2.5 GPA and a 150-word essay with each application. Those who receive GI Bill or Post-9-11 GI Bill benefits, whether due to themselves or through their parents, are not eligible for the scholarships.

Applications for the scholarships are due by May 1, 2017, and will be awarded following Westfield’s Memorial Day parade. Visit post124.org for more information and the application.
