Amherst Downs Westfield State, 3-1

WESTFIELD – Amherst College defeated Westfield State, 3-1 (25-16, 24-26, 25-10, 25-19) in non-conference women’s volleyball action on Wednesday evening.
Amherst improves to 8-5 while Westfield falls to 4-16.
After dropping the first set, 25-16, Westfield pulled out a 26-24 victory by winning the final three points of the see-saw second set, including two clutch kills by junior Julia Warner.
Amherst was led by 6-0 freshman Lizzie Ahern, who posted a game-high 18 kills. Freshman Nicole Carter contributed 28 assists, six service aces and 10 digs to the winning cause and senior Kristin Keeno had 11 digs. Senior Emily Waterhouse recorded nine kills and freshman Sammy Newby finished with seven kills and three blocks.
Warner led the Owls with 15 kills and 13 digs and sophomore Nicole Molleur had 11 kills and two blocks. Sophomore Carole Duquette (7 kills, 3 blocks), freshman Stana Wheeler (40 assists, 7 digs) and junior Kayleigh Shea (14 digs) were Westfield’s other top players.
