Application period opens for 2015 Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education Awards

BOSTON — The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs today announced it is now accepting nominations for its annual Secretary’s Awards for Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education until March 27.
Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Matthew Beaton will present awards this spring to Massachusetts teachers and students involved in school-based programs that promote environmental and energy education.
“I am proud to recognize the teachers and students leading and inspiring their communities as they tackle critical energy and environmental issues,” said Beaton. “This program honors the passion, curiosity and hard work of these educators and students as they study clean energy, recycling, conservation, wildlife and many other pressing issues in our world.”
All public and private Massachusetts schools (K-12) that offer energy and environmental education programs are eligible to apply for the Secretary’s Award. In 2014, schools and nonprofit organizations from 22 communities across the state were recognized for their work on issues including recycling, energy conservation, ocean science, wildlife conservation and alternative fuels.
The Secretary’s Advisory Group on Energy and Environmental Education will review applications through mid-April. Qualified entrants are invited to attend a formal award ceremony with Secretary Beaton at the State House later in the spring.

On Wednesday, Beaton announced that Daniel Sieger will serve as Assistant Secretary for Environment.
“Daniel will be a great addition to the team we are assembling at the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs,” said Beaton. “I am confident in Daniel’s ability to ensure Massachusetts’ position as a leader in environmental reform, and I look forward to working with him going forward.”
“I’m honored to be asked to work for Secretary Beaton, Governor Charlie Baker and Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito,” said Sieger. “I look forward to supporting the preservation of open space and sustainable agriculture as well as ensuring that every citizen of the commonwealth has access to clean air and water, fresh local food, and outdoor recreation.”
Sieger currently serves as Chief of Staff for the Department of Environmental Protection. Prior to joining the Department of Environmental Protection, Daniel spent several years assisting in the oversight of Massachusetts’ four environmental agencies as Special Assistant to the Undersecretary for Environment. Daniel is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts – Boston.
