With baseball season in full swing, the Westfield High School Bombers baseball team is expecting great things. It certainly doesn’t hurt them at all when one of their pitchers, Lee Albertson, has been named by The Republican this year to be one of the top pitchers to look out for this season, as part of the Baseball Super 7.
Albertson has been a part of Bomber baseball as a pitcher ever since his freshman year and has always aspired to pitch for the varsity baseball team.
“Last year was when he really came into his own,” said Rich Discenza, head coach of the WHS baseball team. “He went 7-2 last year and had a 2.20 earned-run average, which is very good.”
His pitching acumen statistically seems impressive but to actually see him in action is something much more concentrated. Focused seemed to be the best word to describe him when asked about his pitching.
“He’s very steady and doesn’t let anything upset him when he’s out there. And if anything does upset him he’s able to get out of it, and regain his focus.” said Discenza.
“He’s very laid back and focused and always has his head in the game. He always works on his mechanics during practice, definitely works hard during games and is one of our best pitchers, by far,” said Adam Mayhew, another pitcher on the WHS baseball team.
Albertson seemed to be very humbled but completely unchanged after finding out he was named one of the top high school pitchers in the area. To him, the only thing that mattered was the enjoyment of playing baseball.
“I just warm up like usual and go. I always try to do my best and I know my teammates will help me out,” said Albertson.
It’s this humility, focus and skill that Albertson and the rest of the WHS Bomber baseball team hopes takes them far this year.
