The Select Board approved a new liquor license for The Proud Chef restaurant last night. The restaurant is located at 784 College Highway.
Selectman Arthur Pinell made a motion to approve the request with the stipulation that service on the deck stops at 10 a.m. and servers become TIPS certified.
Selectman Russell Fox wanted to close the outdoor space at 9 p.m., something the board is set to discuss for all establishments with an outdoor deck or patio.
“I just want to be honest,” said Fox. “We’re looking at this for all establishments – it’s going to be a consistent policy.”
Proud Chef owner Artimisia Liuntas said the outdoor space, which is a covered patio, is a crucial part of her business.
“The patio is integral in the summertime,” said Liuntas. “People dine there and go out to smoke. It’s enclosed so I don’t think it would be a problem for noise.”
Liuntas said there are no bands or other entertainment at The Proud Chef.
Board Chairman Fred Arnold said there were other noise concerns.
“When alcohol is involved, I find voices get loud,” said Arnold.
Liuntas said there are no close neighbors and the restaurant draws an older crowd.
“Most of my customers are 50 and older,” said Liuntas.
Michael McMahon, Southwick’s economic development director, said he believes there are two types of liquor licenses.
“There are places that are entertainment facilities, and those that are restaurants,” said McMahon.
Kelly Magni, who was present in the audience at the Select Board meeting last night, asked if the 9 p.m. outdoor closing was going to be a new bylaw.
“We’re discussing it,” said Arnold. “I don’t know if I agree with Russ’s 9 p.m., but we haven’t sat down to discuss it.”
Police Chief Mark Krynicki said he spoke with Liuntas and supported granting the license.
“I think she is going to do well,” he said. “I like her ideas and I like her attitude.”
