Babe Ruth 15s advance with gutsy win

NORTH ADAMS – After suffering a 19-2 loss from the host All-Stars of North Adams on Friday in the opening round of the 2013 Western Mass. Babe Ruth Tournament, Westfield’s 15 Year Old All-Stars bounced back for a 6-5 victory Saturday against the All-Stars of Worcester’s North Side to get another crack at the home squad Tuesday.
Trailing 5-1 going into the bottom of the seventh and final inning, Westfield cracked hits from Nate Sasso, Jared Iglesias, and Anthony Riga, before a Christian Hoiberg triple sent the boys home to bring Westfield within one.
Mike Diamond, who pitched a complete game for the Whip City All-Stars, got on base with a hit, scoring Hoiberg. But Westfield’s hero for the evening was Drew Carson, whose single brought Diamond home and gave Westfield the walk-off victory, bouncing Worcester from the tournament.
Westfield Coach Teddy Burns was ecstatic over his team’s gutsy win.
“We played good ball,” he said. “Hopefully North Adams thinks they’re going to roll over us Tuesday. We’ve had some good practices since Saturday, so I think we’ll be ready.”
The tournament’s semi-final round will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at North Adams’ Alcombright Field.
