Betty Lee Fertig

WESTFIELD – Betty Lee Fertig passed away peacefully, January 3rd, 2025, after several years of illness.  She was 91 years old.  Born in Baltimore, MD, she moved to San Francisco with her family by train when she was 6.  Her family later settled in Fontana, CA, where she met her beloved husband, Walter.  They were high school sweethearts, soulmates, and the love of each other’s lives.  They were a few days shy of their 70th wedding anniversary upon her passing.

She and Walter had 4 daughters and 1 son.  Margaret, Sally, Becky, Amy (deceased) and Walter Jr.  Also 5 grandchildren, Jennifer, Amy, Chris, Frank and Maggie, and 5 great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Hunter, Eli, Walter and Joanna.  Besides their children, they shared a great love and devotion for each other, were best friends, and had a wonderful fulfilling life together.

Due to Walter’s job, they moved around the country, living in California, Colorado, Florida, North Granby, CT and retiring in Westfield, MA.  Whatever challenge Betty met she took it on, from pulling a loaded car trailer behind a Volkswagen Bus over mountain passes to learning how to drive a forklift at age 50 where she helped unload trucks bringing lumber and cemetery products to our family lumber and hardware store, Granby Home and Handyman, to bookkeeping and running a small business.  Betty later worked as a teller at Northwest Community Bank in Granby, CT, then retired.  She then volunteered at Noble Hospital in Westfield, MA in the accounting department for 18 years where she met her wonderful friend, Pat.  She was well known throughout the hospital for her wonderful cookies at Christmas time.

Betty loved to read, sew, knit, cross stich, make puzzles and bake cookies.  She instilled in all of us a love of reading and learning, a strong sense of fairness and hard work, being respectful and kind.  Mom: All your children love you and thank you for everything!  Betty: You are the love of my life.  Thank you for everything!

Services for Betty Lee Fertig will be private.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s memory may be made to Masonic Charity Foundation of CT, P.O. Box 70, Wallingford, CT 06492, or any charity of choice.  For condolences, please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com.
