SOUTHWICK – When the Southwick Regional High School baseball team takes the field against St. Mary’s May 7 at Westfield Intermediate School, area fans will want to keep an eye on Rams junior pitcher Leighton Billings.
Billings, who recently committed to playing college baseball for the University of Hartford, is described as a “phenomenal kid on and off the field” by his travel team, the 16U Bronx Bombers.

The Bronx Bombers went on to state that “his competitive fire, hard work, determination and athleticism are exemplary. The consummate team player, he leaves nothing on the field. …Don’t be surprised if you see him pitching in the MLB someday.”
Last summer, Billings went a perfect 6-0 with 53 strikeouts over 46 innings and a 1.51 ERA. He led his team to a 2020 16U Super Staten Island Super Qualifier championship title and was named the Most Valuable Pitcher of the tournament.
Billings and the Southwick Rams will open the 2021 season on the road against St. Mary’s Friday at Westfield Intermediate School. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
The Southwick Regional boys volleyball team kicks off the spring sports season Thursday at Sci-Tech. In other openers, Southwick softball hosts Monson (May 7). The Rams’ girls track and field team travels to Hampshire (May 14), while the boys’ track and field team hosts Hampshire (May 19).
