WESTFIELD – Erin McDermott scored two goals, and the No. 7 Westfield High School girls’ soccer team secured a berth in the quarterfinals with a 4-2 win over visiting Amherst (10th seed) in the Western Massachusetts Division I opening round Sunday.
McDermott tallied the first goal in the sixth minute on a pass from Shelby Chambers as part of a 3-1 first half for the Bombers.
Westfield’s McKenzie Saltmarsh and Annie Brozini also scored in the first half. Katie Colapietro assisted on Brozini’s goal. Saltmarsh’s was unassisted.
Sage Dechira scored consecutive goals sandwiched around halftime, but McDermott tacked on an insurance goal shortly after.
Jules Sharon recorded nine saves in net for Westfield.
The Bombers were rewarded with a quarterfinal game against No. 2 Minnechaug.

No. 4 Gateway 2, No. 13 Greenfield 0

Gateway scored a pair of second half goals to win its preliminary round tournament game late Friday. Josh Baillargeon and Calvin Dowers each notched a goal for the Gators. Sam Dean and Denver Yost assisted on each goal, respectively.
Gateway goalie Mike Arel (3 saves) earned a shutout.
FOOTBALL PLAYOFF UPDATE
The Westfield Bombers (13.25 ranking) were seeded second in the West Division 2 playoffs, and will take on third-seeded East Longmeadow (9.5) Friday at Bullens Field at 6 p.m. No. 1 Central (15.5) hosts No. 4 Longmeadow (9.25).
