WESTFIELD – After missing out on all of 2020 due to the pandemic, the Westfield High School spring sports season is nearly upon us.
The Westfield High baseball team is expected to get things rolling when the Bombers host the Pope Francis Cardinals Thurs., May 6. First pitch at Bullens Field is 4 p.m.
“It’s been a long time coming and I’m excited to see all the teams out there competing,” Westfield High School athletic coordinator Ryan Dunphy said.
The high school spring sports slate heats up Fri., May 7 when the Westfield softball team travels to West Springfield to face the Terriers at Mittineague Park. Also Friday, the Bombers tennis program will enjoy a home and away against Agawam.
The Westfield boys tennis team hosts Agawam. The Bombers girls tennis team travels to Agawam to face the Brownies.
After a weekend break, the Westfield softball team returns to action at home Mon., May 10 against Agawam. That same day, the Bombers girls lacrosse team (vs. East Longmeadow) and boys volleyball team (at Agawam) begin their respective 2021 campaigns.
Other season openers for Westfield feature boys lacrosse home against Minnechaug and track and field (boys and girls) at Agawam, both on May 11.
The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association also recently approved the return of high school wrestling. A schedule is expected to be released in the coming days.
While the typical enthusiasm figures to surround the start of the spring season, there is additional intrigue this year. For the first time in more than a year, the majority of teams will now the chance against to compete in the postseason. Wrestling and track and field will only participate in a regular season.
“It will be an exciting time come June when our teams will have the chance to compete for a Western Massachusetts and state championship,” Dunphy said.
