Brown wins as Saints bow out

High School tennis officially came to an end for the year for the Whip City.
No. 2 St. Mary’s, the city’s lone tennis representative in the postseason, fell in the boys’ quarterfinals 4-1 yesterday to seventh-seeded Mount Greylock at the Municipal courts.
Junior Zach Brown capped off an unbeaten run for St. Mary’s (13-2), improving to 14-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jonah Majumder at first singles. Brown competed at the number one and number two slots all season.
“I’m happy we had a great run,” said St. Mary’s sixth-year head coach Rick McKenzie, who announced his retirement earlier this season. “St. Mary’s has a really nice group of juniors coming back for whoever coaches them.”
Saints’ juniors Corey Clemente and Matt Benoit showed promise. The two juniors, who typically compete as the No. 2 doubles pair, lost in three sets at first singles yesterday.
Austin Gois and Zach Slepchuk, both juniors, will also return for St. Mary’s next season.
“To get a chance to have coached these kids makes me one lucky person,” coach McKenzie said.
