Bugbee Road fire still under investigation

SOUTHWICK – A week after the fatal fire on Bugbee Rd., authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire and have not yet released the names of the two individuals who perished in the September 29 structure fire.

At approximately 6:20am on Saturday September 29, 2018 Southwick Fire personnel responded to a fire at 13 Bugbee Rd. Upon arrival the home was fully engulfed. Southwick Fire received mutual aid from Westfield, Granville, Suffield, and Granby fire departments.

There were three people in the home at the time of the fire. One person was able to make it out but the two others did not and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Hampden County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the incident in cooperation with the Massachusetts Fire Marshal’s Office. Jennifer Mieth, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services did say that they’re “focusing on an accidental cause” of the fire.

According to Southwick Fire Chief Russ Anderson, the identities of the victim’s would be announced by the District Attorney’s Office once the medical examiner has finished the formal process and the next of kin are notified. In a follow up with the District Attorney’s Office on Friday we were told that the fire continues to remain under investigation and the names of the two victims are still being withheld.
