SOUTHWICK – The Select Board will be interviewing four internal candidates on Tuesday at 6 p.m. for an open sergeant’s position within the Southwick Police Department.

The four officers who have applied and are qualified candidates are Roger Arduini, Paul Miles, Michael Taggart, and Michael Westcott.

A position that’s subject to a one-year probation period if it’s needed, the required qualifications include that candidates need to have a high school diploma or G.E.D. and have at least five years of experience as a full-time police officer. The job description prefers that candidates have supervisory experience as a police officer.

The request for interested candidates within the Southwick Police Department was posted on July 11 and was open until July 27 at 4 p.m. to send in their application.

According to Select Board Vice-Chairman Russ Fox, with the interviews beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, each interview will take 15 minutes with questions prepared by town counsel.

Fox noted that the Select Board is familiar with a couple of the candidates as they’ve applied for other positions within the department in the past.

“These are all people already on the force,” said Fox. “I’ve already interviewed some of them, they’re known entities.”

On July 10, Chief Kevin Bishop and Lt. Robert Landis met with the Select Board to discuss recent movements within the department. Due to Landis being promoted to lieutenant on May 22, that opened up a vacancy for Landis’s former position, detective sergeant. Bishop informed the board that he’s decided to assign Sgt. Tom Krutka to the Detective sergeant position. The recent promotions are what led to the open sergeant position.
