BOSTON (AP) — Organizers of a petition to repeal the state’s casino gambling law say they are “on track” to submit more than enough signatures to move their proposed ballot question forward.
Repeal the Casino Deal said in a statement on Monday that they expect to submit about 75,000 certified signatures to the Secretary of State by Wednesday’s deadline. Supporters need a minimum of 68,911 signatures to continue efforts to get the measure on the November 2014 ballot.
Attorney General Martha Coakley has ruled the question unconstitutional because it would result in the uncompensated taking of property from casino developers.
But former Attorney General Scott Harshbarger, a leader of the repeal effort, said his group disagrees with Coakley’s interpretation and is hoping the state’s highest court will hear an appeal early next year.
