SOUTHWICK – A request was made at the Select Board meeting last week to extend the Purple Heart Trail into Southwick.
The Board members voted to accept the resolution and a brief ceremony will occur prior to this week’s Select Board meeting, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., in the town hall lobby adopting the trail. The Purple Heart Trail will form a symbolic and honorary system of roads, highways, bridges honoring the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart.
The Select Board is encouraging people in the community and especially anyone who has ever received a Purple Heart, to attend the ceremony.
The Purple Heart Trail in Westfield that has only been in place a few months and will now be extending into Southwick on Route 202. The trail signifies people in the U.S. military who were wounded in a war by an enemy, killed in action, or died from being wounded in action.
There will also be Purple Heart Community signs which will be placed throughout a few areas of Southwick.
In a February 13 Westfield News article, Air Force veteran and Southwick resident Gene Theroux, is spearheading the Purple Heart Trail in Southwick.
“I’m quite honored to be able to work on this project, and clearly, the town of Southwick is to be commended for honoring Purple Heart veterans with the Purple Heart Community signs,” said Theroux.
More details about the Purple Heart Trail’s involvement in Southwick will be announced shortly.
